.... WOW....
Alow me to explain..
After wearing a variety of helmets in the TC range from MSA and some other makers, and finding that they suck a lot less than any other helmet that I had ever worn. I figured head protection for the ground role would not get any better, comfort wise anyway.
Boy was I wrong.
Enter: the Crye Airframe.
The most expensive helmet I have ever put on my head and called my own.
And worth every penny.
It rocks...
For some reason the stars did not align and from all the guys at work, my helmet came in second to last.
I was gutted, but after finally receiving mine, I must say: This thing is as good as it can get, for now anyway, comfort wise.
Put on your velcro, strobes, tabs, NVG mounts, and this thing still weighs a hell of a lot less than my MICH models. And rides more stable on your head, especially with nightvision.
It seems to be a little smaller than most MICH models, yet my Large Airframe fit's more comfortably than my head than my same size MICHes... especially the newer ones with the harder pads seem to induce a lot more headaches. (yes I tried.. I swim in a XL, even with the thicker pad set).
Think this has to do with the helmet wrapping more around your head than the MICH. So it ends up closer to your forehead and neck. Which in turn gives you more situational awareness, and let's you look "up" more easily, both by using your eyes, and by tilting your neck.
There has been some talk about the thing not holding up to certain crush tests, and I'm sure that's true, since it is made of two parts bolted together. While, giving you some kind of airflow... if there is any to be had. Probably doens't help the structual integrity of the piece. So... don't use in on a construction site I guess...
Moving on. The little gap between the two helmet halves can actually be used to route wires, or in my case some dummy cords through.
Don't want to lose those million dollar strobes and such.
The helmet also came with two side rails, like the ops core ones, but specifically made for this shape helmet.
Easily put on/off if you either like or don't like them, or want a little lighter/slicker profile. I put a light of some sort, in this case a Princeton Tec MPLS (great little light) on one side of the rail, and am working on a mount for the contour helmet camera. The rails also have a little bit of bungee with a hook that you can hook on your NVG's, so you don't loose them too fast if they get knocked off.
If you can get away with wearing one, get one. If not, have whoever is in charge take a look at them.
Have Fun!
S.
